Nicholas Broms, Professional downhill skateboarder

The man, the myth, the legend.

His foot pushes off the pavement as he launches himself and his skateboard down the hill. Head down and knees tucked, he puts his hands behind his back in a crouched position to gain as much speed as possible. Nicholas Broms feels the rush of adrenaline coursing through his body as he descends the hill: the feeling he’s been searching for his whole life.

Broms spent the majority of his summers in his local Adrenalina Longboard shop, the company that would later become his first sponsor. He grew up training with older skaters from the shop who began to bring him to races.

As an eighth grader, Broms ditched his last class and was driven to Mount Shasta in a van full of stoned skaters for a race. He made it to the final heat and came seconds away from beating the top downhill skater in California. After this, four different sponsors reached out to him. This is when Broms realized that there was something more in skating for him. He decided to work harder.

“I just fuckin’ love it. It’s like, I step out outside of ordinary life every day and it just reminds you to like, give less fucks. It’s pretty sweet.” Broms said.

By the age of 16, Broms had traveled the world to compete and became the Junior World Champion in 2018, and then again in 2019.

After competing in four qualifiers throughout 2022, Broms was one of six men in the U.S. chosen to represent Team USA for an Olympic Sanction event. The same year, he released a documentary called “Nick Broms: What’s the Rush?” which premiered at the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles last June.

Broms is currently a sophomore at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the president of his fraternity. He stated that he is extremely grateful to be able to balance his education with his career.

If downhill becomes a full Olympic sport, Broms dreams of taking home the gold medal. Whether this happens or not he knows he'll be skating for the rest of his life.
