A Guide to Oregon.

Agate Beach, Newport, OR

The city of Eugene is a college town. You see Oregon Ducks gear, bumper stickers, flags, and anything else you can think of, just about everywhere you go. As a college student, there is much to do in Eugene, but nothing beats Oregon’s nature in its surrounding areas. I spend my weekends taking trips as often as I can. Unlike San Diego, Oregon has vastly different seasons. Different parts of the year determine my go-to's in the areas around Eugene.

In the Fall, when the surf is best and the water is on the warmer side, Agate Beach is one of my favorite parts of the Oregon coast and doubles as the perfect surf spot. The wind is protected by a large bluff and a strong rip current that serves as a water escalator for surfers paddling out. Surfing here was an experience unlike any other. Located just a short walk from a local neighborhood, surfers park along a side street and gear up before hitting the water. Amongst the surfers, locals take their morning stroll along the beach.

Terwilliger Hot Springs, Blue River, OR

The overcast Oregon coast is picture-perfect all year long. If I plan to stay longer than just a day, Cape Meares is where I will be. Charming neighborhoods line the coast and its wide, sandy shore extends for miles. This quaint beach town is perfect for a relaxing weekend with my friends. When we come here, we like to build bonfires at night and sit on logs we find along the shoreline.

Brice Creek Falls, Lane County, OR

During the later months of winter, when the snow is mostly melted but the air is still cold, natural hot springs are exactly where I want to be. My friend and I took a trip about an hour east of Eugene, on a hunt to find the Terwilliger Hot Springs. The temperature of the hottest pool was just over 100 degrees. This was the perfect escape from the brisk outside, and I was blown away by the scenery. While the winters in Oregon can feel long, experiences like this one make it all worth it.

Cape Meares, Tillamook, OR

The spring is easily my favorite time of year in Oregon; when the weather is just warm enough. I love to explore new swimming holes and lakes in the spring. I spend many of my sunny days tanning on the massive flat rocks at Brice Creek Falls and jumping in to cool off. It is serene and mostly private here; you will encounter very few people along the way. Easily accessible parking at a nearby campground and a short walk upstream leads you to a crystal blue waterfall. The surrounding water is so clear it’s almost glass-like. You can see all the way down to its rocky bottom.
